Process Paper
Erik the Red, and his family was a natural choice for this group of one, as I had a lot of prior knowledge on the topic. This was from the collapse unit in Dr. Immel’s class sophomore year. I also have a great fascination with Vikings, as their religion and culture promote belligerence in a way different from our own.
Research was conducted on said topic via google, the norse sagas, and archeological evidence supporting that Vikings had been to the listed locations. The general account and sequence of events, as well as the people in them were found in Iceland, and Greenland sagas, however only the Greenland text was quoted. Various sites and articles were used for confirmation of the validity of the sagas, via other accounts and archeological evidence.
I converted this research into a website for several reasons. First and foremost of these was that it is the easiest option for a group of one, as most of the effort goes into research and formatting. Secondly, websites are easier on the viewer than a paper, as they add a level of interactivity and refinement that enables said viewer to look at a specific set of information without having to scan through a wall of text.
Whilst Erik the Red wasn’t a horribly good person, he was a great leader. When he was banished from Iceland, he lead numerous expeditions west, exploring numerous islands and fjords and also discovering Greenland. He was able to gather a group of men and women, from the nation that he was banished from, and convince them to help him found a new country. This lead to his first legacy, Greenland, and his greatest legacy, his children. These were Leif, Thorvard, and Freydis. Leif discovered North America, Thorvard was killed by Indians, and Freydis was a murderous psychopath.
